My inspiration for this project stems from multiple sources, including John Cage and DJ Screw. John Cage serves as one of my inspirations because of his experiments such as 4:33 that challenged the very concept of music and performance. Although I am not creating a song, I would like to push my composition to the limits of what can be considered an auditory performance/experience. Much like Cage, my other inspiration DJ Screw is known for his early experimentation within musical production. DJ Screw is credited with the invention of the chop and screw, a method of production in which the song is slowed down (screwed) and mixed with other beats (chopped). Although his music was not very popular during his lifetime, the methods of chopping and screwing are extremely prevalent in hip-hop music today. Both of these men were able to push the limits of music, opening the doors for countless composers, producers, and artists that follow them. I would like to carry this spirit of pioneering into my own work.
For this project I am most interested in the manipulation and effects that I can apply to the sounds in Audition. In homage to DJ Screw I intend to slow down a lot of the sound clips in my composition, creating a deeper pitch and distorted texture. Hopefully this will also create a feeling of dissociation or confusion within the listener. Although we are tasked with creating a composition with a clear beginning, middle, and end, I would like to challenge this traditional conception of a storyline. I aim to achieve this through moments of emphasis or breaks that may seem out of place in a conventional narrative.
